On November 3, 2025, Shelbyville Speech and Debate students Irianna Herrera, Zeke Derr, Gaylon Harrison, Maddie Lout, Kennedy McArthur, and Travis Caporali attended the Region 7 AA Congress Tournament held in Athens.

According to U.I.L., Congress is a competition that models the legislative process of the United States Congress. Students research and debate proposed laws and resolutions, delivering speeches for and against each measure before voting on them.

Gaylon Harrison placed fifth and is an alternate to the state competition, also serving as presiding officer. Kennedy McArthur placed third, qualifying for state. Maddie Lout placed second, also qualifying for state, and Travis Caporali was named regional champion and qualified for state as well.

The UIL State Congress Tournament will be held January 7–8 in Austin, Texas. Shelbyville Speech and Debate is coached by Emily Sowell and Crystal Harrison.
